我刚注意到 Godaddy 注册了一个 Tax ID EU826010755，开始对 perchase from the UK 征收 VAT，当前是15% （我在 2月份时仍是免 VAT的）。我不晓得这种财务变动是否伴随着基础设施的变动，可能这种变动已经发生。因为我注意到我的 Godaddy dedicated server 莫名其妙快了很多。

Saturday, January 24th, 2009It is not only affecting my account. I think it is a security hole for all Godaddy nameserver users. I explain in dettails -
I have more than one Godaddy account. I manage my domains in account A, and a deluxe linux share hosting with account B. The nameservers of mydomain.com are set up in account A using xxx.domaincontrol.com. mydomain.com has a wildcard A record pointing to my dedicated server. However, in account B, I can add a domain like sub.mydomain.com. Then when I ping sub.mydomain.com, it will ping out 68.178.254.179 or 72.167.232.13 (share hosting server). That means sub.mydomain.com override the wildcard A record in account A. In theory, other Godaddy share hosting user can also hijack anyname.mydomain.com to point to an ip address of theirs.
It is very scary, isn’t it? I assume Godaddy did not setup DNS infrastructure correctly.

后来有了自由支配的独立服务器，我也不再关心哪里有不带广告的全功能的免费空间。
最近全球经济危机，我想 Lycos 大概也正为它不大不小的业务挣扎。Lycos 通知我说它要把 hosting 移交给 Strato 了。我还有几个域名是通过 Lycos 注册的，而我对 Strato 又比较感冒，我可不想把域名转移给 Strato，所以我赶紧登录尘封多时的 Lycos 帐号，关注了一下 Lycos 的近况。我想 Lycos 正在分崩离析，Lycos 网站到处是 broken links，大概没人更新了。
我有一个 Lycos Tripod UK 帐号，该网站原来被广告骚扰，没派什么用场。现在 Lycos 广告服务器 down 掉了，tripod 服务器还在运行，所以可以说， Lycos Tripod 老用户正享受最高程度的免费午餐。可惜，Lycos 已经不开放注册了，控制面板也登录不了，只有 ftp 尚可登录，但还不知它能跑多久。
我暗自庆幸：Lycos 空间当年是我一个候选方案，但最终投向了 Godaddy 的怀抱。要不然现在，Lycos let me down，而我又不想陷身于 Strato，那可有得我好忙的。
I give up Godaddy’s DNS servers
Monday, January 12th, 2009When I first started with Godaddy, I used to use my dedicated server as a DNS server for my domains. At that time, I could only use Godaddy’s Simple Control Panel (Turbopanel in another name) to edit DNS settings. Simple Control Panel did not have export and import facility, which meant editing multiple domains’ DNS settings was time consuming. Over a period of time, I discovered Godaddy domain management GUI was so powerful, but I must use Godaddy’s DNS servers, e.g. mns01.domaincontrol.com, etc. I knew these DNS servers were slower than average (probably they are overloaded), but I really need a facility like export and import DNS settings. Godaddy domain management GUI could let me export and import DNS settings, so I was quite relaxed using Godaddy’s DNS servers for a long time.
Not until recently had I compared one of my websites using and not using Godaddy’s DNS servers. The benchmark score as per webceo report is 2 vs 6 (0 is the worst, 10 is the best). Using Godaddy’s DNS servers, the website DNS lookup time is extremely longer than if not. When DNS lookup is slow, connection, ping, and download are all slow.
Reading these reports, I decided to relaunch my own dedicated server as a DNS server. However, I do not like use Simple Control Panel to manage DNS settings. I spend quite some time research Godaddy Fedora server structure. Finally I find the named conf files are stored at /var/named-chroot/etc/name-turbopanel.conf and /var/named-chroot/var/named/forward.mydomain. So I can edit these files to achieve the efficiency as using export and import.

Thursday, December 4th, 2008刚在Godaddy开始使用Dedicated Server时，觉得Godaddy自己开发的Simple Control Panel还不错，所有设置都是在Simple Control Panel里完成。不知从什么时候起觉得Simple Control Panel实在不方便，主要是无法完成批量作业。于是，我慢慢摸索常用任务的命令行方式，或者直接修改配置文件。
今天凌晨我纯属好奇，想在Simple Control Panel尝试启动Linux防火墙。很早以前我试过启动防火墙，结果是Actinic无法上传文件，其他网站正常。笨笨的Actinic，但没办法，它是一个主要网站，服务器只有为它Compromise。后来有多次升级，所以我突然想看看Actinic能否与防火墙并存。
可能与平时我直接修改配置文件有关，经我修改的配置文件已经不是Simple Control Panel能看懂的了。我在Simple Control Panel里一点启动防火墙，结果所有的网站都访问不了了，要命的是连Simple Control Panel也访问不了了，我怎么才能关闭防火墙？
因为不知道学习命令行方式关闭防火墙有多难，情急之下先submit a ticket，请support把眼前的问题解决再说。然后当然不能等support回复啦，我开始Google，发现用ssh command line关闭防火墙很简单，真的，两句话搞掂。早知这么简单，我就不会花5分钟时间submit the ticket。
我又花了至少两分钟submit another ticket cancelling the request in the previous ticket。
我喜欢命令行，我喜欢SSH，另外我也喜欢Google。
Godaddy mod_rewrite
Thursday, September 25th, 2008I have two Godaddy accounts now. One is for a dedicated server, the other is for a deluxe share hosting package. Actually I do not need any share hosting once I get a dedicated server, but someone bought this for me, so I spent some time inspecting how good / bad it is.
I should regard myself as a Godaddy loyal client. I am 100% satisfied with their dedicated server service, and also, Godaddy domain management is the most powerful and convenient I have ever seen. However, Godaddy share hosting is definitely not something workable for me.
I am recently struggling at setting up magento in Godaddy share hosting. Magento setup is 50% successful. I mean, magento can run homepage, wishlist, popular search, etc all right, but it run into blank pages at many points, e.g. about us, customer service, etc. Initially I thought it was mod_rewrite problem, so I used phpinfo to check. I did not find mod_rewrite enabled. I quickly installed wordpress to double check, and if I enable wordpress search engine friendly url features, it runs into 404 error. I searched Godaddy Knowledge Base (FAQ centre). It says:
Mod_rewrite is an Apache web server module installed on all of our Linux servers by default; it does not have to be installed or enabled. Our Linux hosting accounts support most mod_rewrite functionality.
You do not need to enable mod_rewrite in your httpd.conf, as this is handled at a global level. All you need to do is add the desired code to the body of your .htaccess file.

NOTE:The .htaccess file containing the rewrite rules must be in the same directory as the target files.
This article did not help me. So I had to submit a ticket. Within several hours, I got the reply (I am satisfied with Godaddy support reponse speed) but it only contained the same words as the answer from Godaddy Knowledge Base. I googled “godaddy mod_rewrite” after I could not get a clear reply from Godaddy. I should have googled it earlier because soon I found someone mentioned rewrite rules in .htaccess with Godaddy share hosting DO NOT TAKE IMMEDIATE EFFECT.
This solved all my queries. Although I still do not know how Godaddy hide mod_rewrite from phpinfo, after several hours of being installed, wordpress is working properly.
However, magento is still not running properly. I assume it has nothing to do with mod_rewrite settings. By all means, to my opinion, magento is not suitable to run on a share hosting package. Installing magento on Godaddy share hosting account is only for my curiosity. I have been running magento successfully on my dedicated server.
Godaddy Offsite DNS
Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008我非常感谢Godaddy提供的Offsite DNS服务，我已经全面实施。
最近发现Godaddy Offsite DNS一个考虑不够周到的方面：Setup Domain for Offsite DNS 之前不进行域名持有人的身份验证，这可能会有一些安全隐患。
我在Godaddy有若干帐号，帐号1对某个域名A设置的Offsite DNS，帐号2购有一个Godaddy Deluxe Plan，Deluxe Plan是个Share Hosting Plan，目前对我来说已经没有使用价值了，但以前曾针对域名A搞了一个测试。Deluxe Plan有自动设置DNS的功能，我没有从帐号2里删除域名A，造成帐号1里域名A的Offsite DNS无法生效。
这里我不理解的是：Offsite DNS和Deluxe DNS使用各自不同的Nameservers，但Deluxe DNS还是影响到了Offsite DNS。
这里我觉得不安全的是：如果帐号1和帐号2分属不同的人，或者域名A转让了主人，而前后主人都使用Godaddy DNS，那岂不是问题多多？
