  • Connection speed of sourceforge

    Connection speed of the Godaddy server is generally slower than the 1&1 server. It was test proven from Europe and China. However, when connecting to downloads.sourceforge.net, Godaddy is faster.

    The Godaddy server automatically chooses the mirror site softlayer.dl.sourceforge.net, and the average speed is 8.55M/s. The 1&1 server chooses dfn.dl.sourceforge.net, and the speed is 70K/s. When I force the 1&1 server to download from softlayer.dl.sourceforge.net, the speed does not improve. It is slower even than I download from my PC via ADSL.

    I do not know why there is such a big difference in connection speed from different locations.

  • I switched Godaddy dedicated server to VPS

    原来在 Godaddy 的独立服务器到期没有续费，昨天我重新订了一台 VPS。其实，这台 VPS 也是并没有大用，只不过预算只能花给 Godaddy，权当是测试 Godaddy VPS 的性能吧。

    使用 Godaddy 的服务两年多，总体感觉满意，尤其满意 Godaddy support 响应比较及时。然而，如今我的资源不一样了，看问题的角度也不一样了，如果重新选择 server 或 VPS service provider 的话，Godaddy 这类名气大的不会是我的首选。一些规模相对较小，或者只是 reseller 级别的 ISP 成了我的首选。只是 reseller 良莠不齐，需要仔细甄别（以前不会甄别，所以只好找 Godaddy 求个省心）。

    Godaddy VPS 可以定制，但挑选余地不大，而且没有 64 位 OS（如果我可以把钱花在别的地方的话，这可以是淘汰 Godaddy 的一个因素）。

    VPS 到手以后，我先装了 vnc server（纯属研究，恐怕没人会拿 VPS 当 remote desktop用吧）。从 VPS 到 vnc server，除了正常的 vnc server 安装步骤，还需要 yum groupinstall "X Window System"，否则登录后是灰屏。GNOME 可以不装，使用 Twm，较 light weight。如果不喜欢，那就 yum groupinstall “GNOME Desktop Environment”。

  • 1and1 support is not professional

    I am quite happy with Godaddy’s product and service. However, virutalisation time is coming and my current dedicated server is not fast enough. Instead of going back to Godaddy for a VPS, I choose 1&1 as my new supplier.

    1&1 offer a slightly better price than Godaddy, but the cost saving is not the incentive of my switching supplier. I trust Godaddy better than 1&1. I think many people feel the same, which makes Godaddy has too many customers. It in turn overloads Godaddy’s servers. (Not efficient and responsive Godaddy’s servers forced me to learn a lot about CLI, which is good for me.)

    My reason of being a 1&1 sounds odd. Anyway, I am now a 1&1 customer. But they disappointed me on the first day after purchase.

    Before my purchase, I called 1&1 support asking how to order additional IPs because their standard checkout does not have this option. I was told I could order additional IPs after logging into my 1&1 account management (of course I have to purchase and get account open first).

    When I got account open, I could not find a link to order additional IPs. So the first support ticket to 1&1 support is “how can I order additional IPs”. Then the reply is “no, 1 VPS can only have 1 IP”!

    I have to write to them again to get IPs.

    The good thing is the IP coming with 1&1 VPS is UK based. I prefer UK IP to US IP for GEO SEO reasons. Before my purchase, I asked 1&1 support “will I get a UK IP” and was told “no, because all VPS are located in America”. So, why I get a UK IP eventually?

  • eu domain transfer

    最近被 Lycos.co.uk 搞得够呛。它突然洗手不干了，估计是因为经济危机的关系。一个不想继续经营的公司服务质量是无法保证的，而且连个 complain 的地方都没有！

    我用到 lycos 的地方并不多，但还是在域名转移上有点麻烦。有几个 eu 域名委托 lycos 注册时，lycos 把联系人邮箱填为我的 lycos id，这个 id 已经无效了。而我一直认为 eu 域名转出需要原注册商的配合，所以反复请求 lycos 支持，而 lycos 爱理不理。事实上并不需要 lycos 配合。现在无暇去研究这个转移模式是否合理，能转成功已经谢天谢地了。

    以转到 godaddy 为例，godaddy 称之为四部曲：

    1. Initiate
    2. Authorize
    3. Accept/Decline
    4. Completion

    前两步几乎是同时完成的，只要在 godaddy 账户里点点鼠标就可以，第三步比较关键，但 godaddy 说

    The transfer is waiting for the customer to accept it at the losing registrar. If the customer does not accept the transfer at the losing registrar within 5 days, the transfer will be accepted automatically.

    这么说默认是 Accept 。如此很好，只要等上 5 天，域名就到 godaddy 账户项下了。

  • Godaddy dedicated server is faster

    我刚注意到 Godaddy 注册了一个 Tax ID EU826010755，开始对 perchase from the UK 征收 VAT，当前是15% （我在 2月份时仍是免 VAT的）。我不晓得这种财务变动是否伴随着基础设施的变动，可能这种变动已经发生。因为我注意到我的 Godaddy dedicated server 莫名其妙快了很多。

  • A security leak of Godaddy DNS

    It is not only affecting my account. I think it is a security hole for all Godaddy nameserver users. I explain in dettails –

    I have more than one Godaddy account. I manage my domains in account A, and a deluxe linux share hosting with account B. The nameservers of mydomain.com are set up in account A using xxx.domaincontrol.com. mydomain.com has a wildcard A record pointing to my dedicated server. However, in account B, I can add a domain like sub.mydomain.com. Then when I ping sub.mydomain.com, it will ping out 68.178.254.179 or 72.167.232.13 (share hosting server). That means sub.mydomain.com override the wildcard A record in account A. In theory, other Godaddy share hosting user can also hijack anyname.mydomain.com to point to an ip address of theirs.

    It is very scary, isn’t it? I assume Godaddy did not setup DNS infrastructure correctly.

  • Tripod now is free with Ad free

    想要一个免费的 hosting 空间，又不想让空间商在送给你免费空间的同时，顺便在你的网站上插播它的广告？有这等好事？当年我就没找到这等免费的午餐（除非用script的手法去屏蔽空间商的广告）。

    后来有了自由支配的独立服务器，我也不再关心哪里有不带广告的全功能的免费空间。

    最近全球经济危机，我想 Lycos 大概也正为它不大不小的业务挣扎。Lycos 通知我说它要把 hosting 移交给 Strato 了。我还有几个域名是通过 Lycos 注册的，而我对 Strato 又比较感冒，我可不想把域名转移给 Strato，所以我赶紧登录尘封多时的 Lycos 帐号，关注了一下 Lycos 的近况。我想 Lycos 正在分崩离析，Lycos 网站到处是 broken links，大概没人更新了。

    我有一个 Lycos Tripod UK 帐号，该网站原来被广告骚扰，没派什么用场。现在 Lycos 广告服务器 down 掉了，tripod 服务器还在运行，所以可以说， Lycos Tripod 老用户正享受最高程度的免费午餐。可惜，Lycos 已经不开放注册了，控制面板也登录不了，只有 ftp 尚可登录，但还不知它能跑多久。

    我暗自庆幸：Lycos 空间当年是我一个候选方案，但最终投向了 Godaddy 的怀抱。要不然现在，Lycos let me down，而我又不想陷身于 Strato，那可有得我好忙的。

  • I give up Godaddy’s DNS servers

    When I first started with Godaddy, I used to use my dedicated server as a DNS server for my domains. At that time, I could only use Godaddy’s Simple Control Panel (Turbopanel in another name) to edit DNS settings. Simple Control Panel did not have export and import facility, which meant editing multiple domains’ DNS settings was time consuming. Over a period of time, I discovered Godaddy domain management GUI was so powerful, but I must use Godaddy’s DNS servers, e.g. mns01.domaincontrol.com, etc. I knew these DNS servers were slower than average (probably they are overloaded), but I really need a facility like export and import DNS settings. Godaddy domain management GUI could let me export and import DNS settings, so I was quite relaxed using Godaddy’s DNS servers for a long time.

    Not until recently had I compared one of my websites using and not using Godaddy’s DNS servers. The benchmark score as per webceo report is 2 vs 6 (0 is the worst, 10 is the best). Using Godaddy’s DNS servers, the website DNS lookup time is extremely longer than if not. When DNS lookup is slow, connection, ping, and download are all slow.

    Reading these reports, I decided to relaunch my own dedicated server as a DNS server. However, I do not like use Simple Control Panel to manage DNS settings. I spend quite some time research Godaddy Fedora server structure. Finally I find the named conf files are stored at /var/named-chroot/etc/name-turbopanel.conf and /var/named-chroot/var/named/forward.mydomain. So I can edit these files to achieve the efficiency as using export and import.
